In June of 2017 I had the pleasure of touring China, playing in venues all over the country for a total of nine nights. It was the first tour for my project Child of Mind and I couldn't have hoped for a better ‘first tour’. There were so many highlights, I met so many nice people, visited so many interesting places and I wish we could have recorded each concert. Every time you play a piece of music it is, in some way or another, unique. Some audiences are louder than others, there’s a bit less vibrato here, a more aggressive approach to the chorus there, and suddenly a whole other mood develops and a new shade of emotion frames the song. Of course, we couldn’t record the concert every evening though and I’m just delighted we got to record it at least once. Both video and sound captured forever.

The sound is stripped-back and naked, at any one time the most you will hear are two guitars and two voices. That’s it. It was enjoyable to let the arrangements, melodies and chord changes do the talking. A live CD differs quite greatly from a studio recorded CD. For starters, it’s one take and one take only. There’s no place for not feeling your best. In the studio you put your headphones on and immerse yourself in a wall of sound, a wall that you chip away at in the honourable but impossible pursuit of perfection. Live however, this solitudinous cave of creation is gone and instead you find yourself on a stage with a sea of faces singing right back at you. Furthermore, instead of working in an acoustically perfect room, you’re dealing with something that might have hosted not only your concert but an exhibition and a sports competition all in the same week.

That doesn’t make it bad though. It’s just different. And this difference is one of the many things that can make working on a live record so much fun. I thank everyone who helped bring the whole project together, it’s been a pleasure, an absolute pleasure and I hope I get the chance to do it all again soon. Until then though, put your headphones on, turn the volume up and wherever you are in the world, join us in Shenzhen. The year is 2017 and this is Child of Mind.
